Travel by Train to Cameron Highlands then by Bus or Taxi

I sent this question to Kang Tours and Travel \"In Feb/Mar 2013 I intend to come from Singapore by train which reaches Ipoh about 6pm. I\'d like to stay in Cameron Highlands that night, do one of your full day tours and get back to Ipoh that evening to catch the overnight train to Thailand. Does that sound possible and what costs are involve?\"

I didn\'t get a reply, can you help? Thanks.

Dear John

If I read right, your planned schedule is:

6pm arrive ipoh train station and try to find a taxi
8pm arrive Cameron Highlands after a 2 hours drive arriving at night
go for night tour say for 1 hour ( I don't know who would entertain you, probably the same taxi that you took from Ipoh could drive you around and one hour at night won't get you to see anything probably just stuck in Tanah Rata or other town Brinchang, for 1/2 hours each because everything else is pitch black at night...)
9pm depart for the dangerous 2 hours drive back to Ipoh
11pm arrive back at train station and catch the midnight train

All done in just one night!
I think your plan is ridiculous!
Cheers!
Jan

Dear Jan

Thanks for replying.

Yes, I agree that plan would be ridiculous. No, my plan is: after arriving about 6pm in Ipoh taxi (or bus if available?) to hotel/lodge in Cameron Highland, stay there that night, take a day tour the next day ending late afternoon/early evening (as I think the Kang Tours do) then go back to Ipoh for the train.

A bit short, perhaps, but a whole day of daylight for the tour not the black of evening and all the time I have available.

Cheers,
John

Dear John,

Ah! Now it make sense!

Because your time is short and arriving in the evening, catching a taxi to Cameron Highlands would be the better option but would be costlier (no idea of the price but would be at least RM100 and above)

Hotels price range between RM80 to RM200, but go for higher price for more comfort, somewhere around RM150 at Century Pines would be good.

Then after tour, you could check whether Kang Travel and Tours has any mini-van services for the evening to Ipoh. Or you could check the bus station for its inaccurate bus schedule. If you want to avoid missing the train ride, best to go for Kang's mini van service (if any available to Ipoh) or worse come to worse, taxi service.

Cheers!

Dear Jan

Once again thanks for all the info, the taxis seem a bit expensive and I was wondering if Kang Tours or someone else could do me a complete package with pick-up at Ipoh, transfer to Cameron Highlands, accommodation that night, a tour the next day and then transfer back to Ipoh.

I mention Kang Tours because they do seem to have accommodation, do day tours and you mention the possibility of a mini-van service. Also I noticed you maintain their web site and I was wondering if you could check if the query I sent through the site ever reached them. I did have some difficulty as the initial page reported a fault when I submitted the form but then I seemed to be taken to another web form (it looked entirely different) which did seem to accept my query. But they never answered so did they ever get my enquiry? Could you ask, please.

Thanks again for your help,
John.

Dear John

I'm no longer maintaining their website. Looks like the other person not doing a good job on mail redirection despite being a better web designer than me.

You may email them directly at:

kangtravellershotel@hotmail.com
danielslodge@hotmail.com

Due to they receive many inquiries and a family run business, you may want to call them for immediate response to your query, their staff may be able to assist your queries.

Yes, they have a mini van service but they need to fill it up with passengers in order to run it efficiently. Ipoh does not have high tourist volume. Perhaps your best bet would be to get your mini van pickup from Kuala Lumpur instead (if you are coming up from the south). Then you can check for their north schedule and have them drop you off to Ipoh if convenient, if not you may need to drop off in Butterworth if they are ok with it or you may have to end up in Georgetown as most majority of tourist would go there.

And yes, they have room and rather budget, but for a good night's sleep I would still suggest a nicely furnished hotel. After all it is just for one night. Being on travel sometimes there are expenses that should be spent and not try to save.

And yes, taxi are expensive, so if you want to save on transport, the above idea would match with each other. Buses are best considered last due to not running on time, breakdowns, and dangerous (especially night service, and the regular news report of bus crashes happens mostly at night). The last point already make me shudder.

Looking for Guesthouse Backpacking Accommodation and Tours

Hye there

I found this website is really helpful and I appreciate all your effort in maintaining this website. I'm planning for backpacking expedition to Cameron with my girlfriend this coming end of June or early July...

Planning to take bus from KL to Tanah Rata and look for hotels there..at the same time, trying to look for any tour package available there..

Do you have any suggestion hotels or tour package for Cameron..hope to hear some great stuff from you guys.. If possible, please suggest me the affordable single room. Although I'm willing to take the double room and share the room with my gf, it's wrong to do that in Malaysia and the possibility of the government agencies to check is there.

So, hope to find some good suggestion from you.

Cheers!

Dear Long,

Hotels stay will depend on your budget. If you want comfortable go for star rated like Heritage, Century Pines, Equatorial, Strawberry Park, De La Ferns, etc. If budget, there are guesthouses like Kang Travelodge, Father's Guesthouse, Cameronian Inn, Eight Mentigi and KRS/Twinpines. Do check my hotel list for short listing.

And there is no problem staying with your girlfriend in the hotel room. What you do there is private and none of the government business. Do keep it quiet though. That's where star rated hotels would be better suggestion. ;P

For tours, try Father's Guesthouse Cameron Secrets or Kang Travel and Tours. You can find their contacts on my website.

Cheers!

Dear Jan,

Thanks a lot for such a quick reply.
I appreciate it so much.

I already short listing 7 guest houses which are Cameronian Inn, Kang Travel Hotel, Twin Pines, The Highlanders, Gerard's Place, Eight Mentigi and Jurina Hill. Since I'm a backpacker, I'm looking forward for guest house which is close to shops and bus station at the same time and I find that these 7 are suit with my budget and at the same time not too far from bus station.

Do it been a problem if I book tour and guest house separately? For example, let say I'm staying in Cameronian Inn but choose to take Kang's Place Tour Package? And yeah, my concern is still about the accommodation with the government check stuff. LOL! But yeah, should survey deeply more about this. How about dorm? Between these 7, which one is the best? If two single room seems to be too expensive, I might consider taking 1 dorm and 1 cheap double room like in 8 Mentigi and Gerard's Place.

This is my first time coming to CH. So, sorry for too many questions.

Many thanks,
Long

Dear Long,

Gerard's Place? this one I haven't heard before, where is this? I would like to check this up next time I'm up there.

Guesthouse are economical but the sound do travel out so you need to keep it quiet at night to avoid disturbing the peace. Boy and girl in same room is ok otherwise all the locals will have a big problem when going for holiday (including courting couples)! Private places would be an invasion of privacy but then we don't really have privacy laws here and sometimes MPs come up with stupid suggestions and comments every once in awhile. Enough of my gripe about local laws.

Room and tours are mutually exclusive, so no problem there.

As for which guesthouse, I can't say which is better as I found them all to be rather nice though each has their own pros and cons. Book the rooms, better than dorm. More privacy, besides the difference isn't that much (c'mon, Brit Pound to Ringgit just a few Pound difference won't even make a dent in your budget! But when I went to UK for holiday, it really hurt my pocket you know!). Esp for couples. And no worries about enforcers, they don't disturb the place (never heard of any in CH anyway) as it will give tourism Malaysia a bad name.

Cheers!

Dear Jan,

That's gonna be a great idea. By the way, Gerard's Place is in conjunction with Father's Place. Normally in peak time, Father's Place gonna be really full and they set up Gerard's Place as a back up., But yeah, based on tripadvisor website, the review on Gerard's Place is higher compare to Father's Place. But you shall check it. It just around 3-5 minutes walk from Father's Place.

Oh yeah, is Father's Place far from town? Cause another guest houses are close to town except Father's Place. Maybe a rough idea about its location gonna be really helpful.

Cheers!
28/4/2011

Ah, Gerard! Should have known he made place name after himself! Will have to check it up with him next time I go up there. All the guesthouses are within walking distance to Tanah Rata (except when it rains then it will feel very far! Haha!). 5-10 minutes walk is about it for any of them. Me being lazy, I drive, which takes less than a minute but takes another 3-5 minutes looking for parking! Tanah Rata is a very small town.

Cheers!

Affordable budget accommodation recommendations

Hello..

Terima kasih. :)

Dear Nooratika,
Haven't seen the ad from Genting. Best you go during low peak season for cheaper rate. But if you really want affordable for student you should consider Cameron Highlands and stay in Guesthouse. Genting do not cater for cheap accommodation, but Cameron Highlands does.

There are 5 guesthouse you can try in Cameron Highlands:
-Kang Travelodge
-Father's Guesthouse
-Cameronian Inn
-Eight Mentigi
-Twin Pines

It is dormitory style shared room at RM15 per night per person.

Contacts for Homestay at Taman Sedia

Hi Jan

Thanks for the information on your website on Cameron Highlands.

One thing caught my attention - Homestay at Taman Sedia. You've posted a list and their telephone numbers.

Do they have a email address and can they understand english if I call or write?

What I want to know is how much will it cost to stay for 3 nights for 2 persons.

What else would be provided besides accommodation? What to expect from this kind of stay?

Thank you for your assistance.

Backpackers Day Trip Tour to Brinchang

I need your help to suggest me about how to buy day trip or tour to Brinchang. I will go to Cameron Highland in April and stay in Tanah Rata for 2 nights but it'd be great if we can set up our travel plan to fully utilize our short vacation.

Thanks in advance for your advice & thanks for useful info in your link.

Dear Boebie Brown,
There is no day trip package to Brinchang. Just use a taxi to get there.
Regards,
Jan.

Thank you Jan.. However, we are budget backpackers so we would like to know how much we will pay for it or any public transportation provided.
Boebie
8/3/2011

Dear Brown,

It is possible to walk from Tanah Rata to Brinchang, how long it takes I have no idea as I usually drive. Driving takes about 5 minutes, so it might take about 30 minutes by walking (just a guess). Taxi cost RM25 per hour, can take up to 4 passengers (1 front, 3 rear) if you are plus size then only 2 rear or you can try to squeeze in! Or you can use the public bus but walking might get you there sooner than public bus!

Backpackers... so very likely you will be staying at Kang Travelodge, Father's Guesthouse, Cameronian Inn, Twinpines or 8 Mentigi. Check with them about tour packages with cheapest starting from RM60.

Cheers!
