Stayed in Equatorial Hotel Cameron for 3 days two nights, it was superb!
Really great service, clean, efficient, scenic, breathtaking view, perfect location (next to many locations). The western style grill, coffee house and Chinese cuisine restaurant were really superb. We were very impressed.
Its a tiny 1970s period enclave time capsule - a perfect example of a perfectly run 1970s era hotel. I would return to stay at this hotel again and again, i am in love with it.
It looks and smells like 1970s - that signature wet carpet stale cigarette moldy curtain bouquet - I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF IT !!!
I enjoyed Cameron highlands so much I would visit it and spend Christmas there every year from now. Its like a Malaysian Switzerland !!!

Travel by Train to Cameron Highlands then by Bus or Taxi
I sent this question to Kang Tours and Travel \"In Feb/Mar 2013 I intend to come from Singapore by train which reaches Ipoh about 6pm. I\'d like to stay in Cameron Highlands that night, do one of your full day tours and get back to Ipoh that evening to catch the overnight train to Thailand. Does that sound possible and what costs are involve?\"
I didn\'t get a reply, can you help? Thanks.

Dear John
If I read right, your planned schedule is:
6pm arrive ipoh train station and try to find a taxi
8pm arrive Cameron Highlands after a 2 hours drive arriving at night
go for night tour say for 1 hour ( I don't know who would entertain you, probably the same taxi that you took from Ipoh could drive you around and one hour at night won't get you to see anything probably just stuck in Tanah Rata or other town Brinchang, for 1/2 hours each because everything else is pitch black at night...)
9pm depart for the dangerous 2 hours drive back to Ipoh
11pm arrive back at train station and catch the midnight train
All done in just one night!
I think your plan is ridiculous!
Cheers!

Dear Jan
Thanks for replying.
Yes, I agree that plan would be ridiculous. No, my plan is: after arriving about 6pm in Ipoh taxi (or bus if available?) to hotel/lodge in Cameron Highland, stay there that night, take a day tour the next day ending late afternoon/early evening (as I think the Kang Tours do) then go back to Ipoh for the train.
A bit short, perhaps, but a whole day of daylight for the tour not the black of evening and all the time I have available.
Cheers,
John

Dear John,
Ah! Now it make sense!
Because your time is short and arriving in the evening, catching a taxi to Cameron Highlands would be the better option but would be costlier (no idea of the price but would be at least RM100 and above)
Hotels price range between RM80 to RM200, but go for higher price for more comfort, somewhere around RM150 at Century Pines would be good.
Then after tour, you could check whether Kang Travel and Tours has any mini-van services for the evening to Ipoh. Or you could check the bus station for its inaccurate bus schedule. If you want to avoid missing the train ride, best to go for Kang's mini van service (if any available to Ipoh) or worse come to worse, taxi service.
Cheers!

Dear Jan
Once again thanks for all the info, the taxis seem a bit expensive and I was wondering if Kang Tours or someone else could do me a complete package with pick-up at Ipoh, transfer to Cameron Highlands, accommodation that night, a tour the next day and then transfer back to Ipoh.
I mention Kang Tours because they do seem to have accommodation, do day tours and you mention the possibility of a mini-van service. Also I noticed you maintain their web site and I was wondering if you could check if the query I sent through the site ever reached them. I did have some difficulty as the initial page reported a fault when I submitted the form but then I seemed to be taken to another web form (it looked entirely different) which did seem to accept my query. But they never answered so did they ever get my enquiry? Could you ask, please.
Thanks again for your help,
John.

Due to they receive many inquiries and a family run business, you may want to call them for immediate response to your query, their staff may be able to assist your queries.

Yes, they have a mini van service but they need to fill it up with passengers in order to run it efficiently. Ipoh does not have high tourist volume. Perhaps your best bet would be to get your mini van pickup from Kuala Lumpur instead (if you are coming up from the south). Then you can check for their north schedule and have them drop you off to Ipoh if convenient, if not you may need to drop off in Butterworth if they are ok with it or you may have to end up in Georgetown as most majority of tourist would go there.
And yes, they have room and rather budget, but for a good night's sleep I would still suggest a nicely furnished hotel. After all it is just for one night. Being on travel sometimes there are expenses that should be spent and not try to save.
And yes, taxi are expensive, so if you want to save on transport, the above idea would match with each other. Buses are best considered last due to not running on time, breakdowns, and dangerous (especially night service, and the regular news report of bus crashes happens mostly at night). The last point already make me shudder.
Cheers!

Pet friendly accommodation
Hi Jan,
We are planning to do a few days trip to Cameron Highlands with our two dogs. Any recommendation on pet friendly accommodation & place of interest??
Thanks.

Dear Alison Chin
Many have asked this question before, unfortunately most establishment (especially the upmarket ones) do not quite accept pets in their accommodation. You could only try with the smaller budget accommodation establishment who may be able to accommodate to your request.
You could try Cameronian Inn as I have seen some guests with pets.
Or else try out with apartment owners. Which landlord can accept I do not know, you just have ask and see.
Regards,
Jan.

Heritage Hotel view from Greenhill Apartment
Here's a nice view of Heritage Hotel from Greenhill Apartment. Due to lack of available rooms in hotel from the Heritage Vacation Club, we had to shift to Greenhill Apartment the next day to house a large number of family members.
Actually could have avoided all this hassle but due to miscommunication from my wife and my dad and the Heritage Vacation Club, the bookings became a mess. So no choice, wasted a night's stay of the Vacation Club points plus the hassle of having to shift all the luggage from hotel to apartment.
Well you, whenever a family group travel, and now with baby, the sheer number of items to bring for a trip is quite a bundle.
Anyway, this apartment got a nice view despite having to port all the stuffs 3 floors up! Fortunately many hands make work light.
Now the sky is getting balmy and slight drizzle, so our outdoor activities to the various attractions in Cameron Highlands may be hampered somewhat. Anyway, time for lunch soon, but first feed baby and then off we go!

Looking for Guesthouse Backpacking Accommodation and Tours
Hye there
I found this website is really helpful and I appreciate all your effort in maintaining this website. I'm planning for backpacking expedition to Cameron with my girlfriend this coming end of June or early July...
Planning to take bus from KL to Tanah Rata and look for hotels there..at the same time, trying to look for any tour package available there..
Do you have any suggestion hotels or tour package for Cameron..hope to hear some great stuff from you guys.. If possible, please suggest me the affordable single room. Although I'm willing to take the double room and share the room with my gf, it's wrong to do that in Malaysia and the possibility of the government agencies to check is there.
So, hope to find some good suggestion from you.
Cheers!

Dear Long,
Hotels stay will depend on your budget. If you want comfortable go for star rated like Heritage, Century Pines, Equatorial, Strawberry Park, De La Ferns, etc. If budget, there are guesthouses like Kang Travelodge, Father's Guesthouse, Cameronian Inn, Eight Mentigi and KRS/Twinpines. Do check my hotel list for short listing.
And there is no problem staying with your girlfriend in the hotel room. What you do there is private and none of the government business. Do keep it quiet though. That's where star rated hotels would be better suggestion. ;P
For tours, try Father's Guesthouse Cameron Secrets or Kang Travel and Tours. You can find their contacts on my website.
Cheers!

Dear Jan,
Thanks a lot for such a quick reply.
I appreciate it so much.
I already short listing 7 guest houses which are Cameronian Inn, Kang Travel Hotel, Twin Pines, The Highlanders, Gerard's Place, Eight Mentigi and Jurina Hill. Since I'm a backpacker, I'm looking forward for guest house which is close to shops and bus station at the same time and I find that these 7 are suit with my budget and at the same time not too far from bus station.
Do it been a problem if I book tour and guest house separately? For example, let say I'm staying in Cameronian Inn but choose to take Kang's Place Tour Package? And yeah, my concern is still about the accommodation with the government check stuff. LOL! But yeah, should survey deeply more about this. How about dorm? Between these 7, which one is the best? If two single room seems to be too expensive, I might consider taking 1 dorm and 1 cheap double room like in 8 Mentigi and Gerard's Place.
This is my first time coming to CH. So, sorry for too many questions.
Many thanks,
Long
27/4/2011
Dear Long,
Gerard's Place? this one I haven't heard before, where is this? I would like to check this up next time I'm up there.
Guesthouse are economical but the sound do travel out so you need to keep it quiet at night to avoid disturbing the peace. Boy and girl in same room is ok otherwise all the locals will have a big problem when going for holiday (including courting couples)! Private places would be an invasion of privacy but then we don't really have privacy laws here and sometimes MPs come up with stupid suggestions and comments every once in awhile. Enough of my gripe about local laws.
Room and tours are mutually exclusive, so no problem there.
As for which guesthouse, I can't say which is better as I found them all to be rather nice though each has their own pros and cons. Book the rooms, better than dorm. More privacy, besides the difference isn't that much (c'mon, Brit Pound to Ringgit just a few Pound difference won't even make a dent in your budget! But when I went to UK for holiday, it really hurt my pocket you know!). Esp for couples. And no worries about enforcers, they don't disturb the place (never heard of any in CH anyway) as it will give tourism Malaysia a bad name.
Cheers!
Jan
28/4/2011
Dear Jan,
That's gonna be a great idea. By the way, Gerard's Place is in conjunction with Father's Place. Normally in peak time, Father's Place gonna be really full and they set up Gerard's Place as a back up., But yeah, based on tripadvisor website, the review on Gerard's Place is higher compare to Father's Place. But you shall check it. It just around 3-5 minutes walk from Father's Place.
Oh yeah, is Father's Place far from town? Cause another guest houses are close to town except Father's Place. Maybe a rough idea about its location gonna be really helpful.
Cheers!
28/4/2011
Ah, Gerard! Should have known he made place name after himself! Will have to check it up with him next time I go up there. All the guesthouses are within walking distance to Tanah Rata (except when it rains then it will feel very far! Haha!). 5-10 minutes walk is about it for any of them. Me being lazy, I drive, which takes less than a minute but takes another 3-5 minutes looking for parking! Tanah Rata is a very small town.
Cheers!

Cheers!

Dear Jan,
That's gonna be a great idea.
Cheers!

Cheers!

casa dela rosa. any comment? - Ken 15/4
Oh, that one facing the golf course. Have not seen their rooms. Looks nice from the outside. Pricey too. They belong to the same owner for a chain of hotels in CH (De La Ferns, Rosa Passedena). Should be good. Let me know if the hotel was good. And of course, do tell me she said yes to your proposal!
All the best!

Affordable budget accommodation recommendations
Hello..
Terima kasih. :)

Dear Nooratika,
Haven't seen the ad from Genting. Best you go during low peak season for cheaper rate. But if you really want affordable for student you should consider Cameron Highlands and stay in Guesthouse. Genting do not cater for cheap accommodation, but Cameron Highlands does.
There are 5 guesthouse you can try in Cameron Highlands:
-Kang Travelodge
-Father's Guesthouse
-Cameronian Inn
-Eight Mentigi
-Twin Pines
It is dormitory style shared room at RM15 per night per person.
More info please visit my Cameron Highlands website at

HSBC Smart Privileges Hotel Promotion 2011
While browsing through the HSBC Smart Privileges brochure, invariably I would peek in to the hotel promotion. Guess what? I found two hotel promotions for Cameron Highlands! The Equatorial Cameron Highlands Hotel and Hotel De La Ferns. So if any of you guys are holding a HSBC credit card, you could have a look see look see on the promotion and see if this meets your budget. These are not your budget hotel, so do expect to pay for a good stay. Having stayed in all kinds of hotel so I should know that you do pay for the extras.

Hotel De La Fern HSBC Promotion
Hotel Equatorial Cameron Highlands HSBC Promotion
If this is not your budget then look through my Cameron Highlands hotel list and take a pick at any of the hotels. Yep, there is so many and you wonder which ones to choose. I may not be able to look at all of them but did managed to look see some of them. Now all I need is to find time to post my findings. Wish I got more time to do it. With work getting busy, time getting scarce and bringing up baby and family to care, this travelogue website is going to take some humongous effort to get things going!
Meanwhile you may like to study the brochure which I pick out from HSBC Smart Privilege brochure by following the links above. Or if you prefer, you can head out to HSBC website and look through their e-brochure.
Cheers!

Hotel De La Ferns Cameron Highlands HSBC Promotion 2011
While browsing further and making my blog post, I found this HSBC Promotion too in the HSBC Smart Privileges brochure. So looks like Hotel De La Ferns Cameron Highlands is jumping into the credit card promotion bandwagon too! This hotel is much pricier than the Equatorial promotion although it comes with breakfast and steamboat meal. Well this hotel is new (it's been more than a year now, still considered new I suppose) and they have been improving on their service. As the last time I checked up with them they gave me a good nice tour of the place. Just need to find the time write the blog post because I'm so busy right now I haven't found the time to do a proper update.

Hotel De La Ferns did admit their café restaurant service still need to be improved upon so let's hope this promotion which includes breakfast and steamboat dinner will live up to the improvement of F&B services.
As for the rooms, they are superb and probably charge a premium if comparing against other star rated hotels except YTL, Smokehouse and Lakehouse which are far more expensive. So you want nice and good, Hotel De La Ferns is the place. Location is great too! Just between Brinchang and Tanah Rata.
So study the HSBC Smart Privileges brochure which I extracted here and if you owned a HSBC credit card you can go for it if you feel the rates is within your budget for a Cameron Highlands vacation, right!

Equatorial Cameron Highlands HSBC Promotion 2011
I'm sure some of you guys are holding a HSBC credit card so looks like you can take up this Equatorial Cameron Highlands promotion. HSBC Smart Privileges brochure has something yummy for everybody, so while I was browsing it through I happened to bump into this hotel promotion. Such promotions are good for us right? After all it is cheaper than the usual rack rates. But of course you can still give a comparison by calling up Hotel Equatorial and ask them whether they have any other promotional rate, then compare that with the HSBC Smart Privileges promotion and see which offer is better. Shop smart mah!

I have stayed in Equatorial some years back with my wife and we certainly enjoyed our stay there saved for the rather slower maintenance / housekeeping service, in which they didn't seem to come to our room to fix up the faulty bathroom lights despite calling them so many times till finally the men came when we were about to check out. Hopefully you won't suffer any of that kind of nonsense while you stay there. This could happen in any Malaysian hotels not just here I suppose. Just a management issue. They did send an apology letter later. Hey this is a service industry and we need to compete against our neighbours like Thailand and Indonesia which I felt seem to give better hotel service when I travelled to those places. So buck up Malaysia Hotels!
Meanwhile study the promo which I extracted out from the HSBC newsletter for your perusal. Hope it meets your vacation budget!

Trying out Eight Mentigi Guesthouse
I'm giving this Eight Mentigi Guesthouse a try. Initially I was to 'tumpang' my accommodation in Father's Guesthouse but Gerard wants to introduce his friends lodging which was started not too long ago in 2010.
A great way to boost up 8 Mentigi vacancy by having me stay the night and then later blog about it on my CHD website.
I blog more about this place later as I didn't sleep so well last night in Penang. Don't know why I'm having insomnia lately; could be due to too many things in my mind.
Natasya Resort Cameron Highlands

Looks like another new Cameron Highlands apartment accommodation just sprung up out of no where. With the many construction and projects coming up you never know what is coming. The new Natasya Resort Cameron Highlands is located in Kea Farm next to Hotel Equatorial. It boast many facilities and amenities much like a regular hotel. Judging from the price tag, it doesn't look cheap. Then again most apartments in Cameron Highlands aren't cheap anyway, but when you figure in the number of persons such as your entire family clan, the cost per person goes down significantly. And more so if you all share the cost of the accommodation.
Rates as shown on their website:
Include breakfast:
Normal Rate
Weekdays = MYR 310 nett / MYR 480 nett (peak rate)
Weekend = MYR 380 nett / MYR 480 nett (peak rate)
Exclude breakfast:
Normal Rate
Weekdays = MYR 250 nett / MYR 420 nett (Peak Rate)
Weekend = MYR 320 nett / MYR 420 nett (Peak Rate)
Will have to check this place next time I up at Cameron Highlands.
Cheers!

My Parents is at Heritage Hotel Cameron Highlands
My parents is having a gala time up at Heritage Hotel Cameron Highlands. They want to use up their balance leftover Heritage Vacation Club points before it expires. Wish I could go, unfortunately due to work and family commitment I have to give this a pass.
They plan to try the Heritage Hotel new wing but the new wing is not listed under the bookable rooms for Heritage Vacation Club members. Nevertheless they will try to talk with the manager in charge and see if they got chance to give it a try. If so, perhaps I might just get some photos of the new wing and the rooms too!

Chinese Homestay in Cameron Highlands
My uncle went for a Chinese Homestay in Cameron Highlands. It is a farm located in Kea Farm. Interesting. Usually homestays in Malaysia are in Malay house. So this is something new to me. Perhaps the Malaysia homestay program is just helping the Malay home owners mostly for their side income and I wonder if they also do help out with the Chinese Homestay who would like to participate in this kind of homestay program. It would be great if the government helped the less abled Chinese community too and that would definitely boost the 1 Malaysia concept of Malaysia first rather than just talking rhetoric.
Anyway my uncle had a great time on this alternative form of Cameron Highlands accommodation so if you would be interested to give this homestay accommodation a try you may contact this Chinese Homestay in Cameron Highlands.
Contact details:
"Ng Family"
MDCH 188 Kea Farm
39100 Brinchang, Cameron Highlands
Tel: +605-496 1240
Mobile: +6017-5192404
It seems they have a website, but my uncle has misplaced that info.
Anyway, there is still the phone contact above if you wish to check this homestay accommodation in Kea Farm.

Equatorial Cameron Highlands EON Bank Promotion
Saw this Hotel Equatorial Cameron Highlands Hari Raya promotion on my brother's EON Bank credit card. So if you are looking for some cuti-cuti Malaysia promotion, you can look through the fine print and see if this offer is worth it. My brother was considering it but there are some terms and condition to be considered. Too bad my mobile camera makes such a lousy shot so can't really see the details. So I just have to decipher what best that I could squint out of the blurry info.

This is a Ramadhan Hari Raya Puasa Promotion for Equatorial Cameron Highlands for 3D2N Superior Room Package at RM140++ per person on twin sharing basis. That means it is RM322 nett for 3D2N for two person 3 nights 2 day stay. Plus you get 1 night Ramadhan complimentary meal but the term wasn't very clear whether it covers for the 2 person or one person so you just have to clarify with Equatorial Hotel about this.
This offer valid from 11 Aug to 3 Sep 2010 but not valid during Merdeka Day weekend of 28 to 30 Aug 2010. That's because it will be a super weekend (but you need to take one day off on Monday as most holiday goers will do to save on annual leave!)
Anyway I saw this promo with EON Bank Credit Card, not sure other credit cards will have similar offer or whether Hotel Equatorial Cameron Highlands may have their own other offer but this is what I can see at this moment. I don't have EON credit card, but then who knows you may own one and you might one to give this a try! But read the fine print first. There is always some terms and condition before such promo is applicable to you.
For me? Kinda busy around this time but hope to make it up to Cameron Highlands one day in this year again. Hotel Equatorial is not too bad having stayed there once several years ago.
