Orang Asli and Jungle Trekking

Your website is very useful, and some of the stories are amusing.

I visited the Cameron Highlands last February whilst doing research on British History.

I trekked through the Jungle with the use of ASLI tribesmen as my guides (lovely people)what I would say is if your going off an established trail please ensure that you speak with the local Asli village chief, this is their land and as tourists we need to respect the heritage, culture and traditions.

When I heard stories from the Asli people of tourists just wondering around on their land I feel nothing but disgust we wouldn't want people just wondering through our homes with out been announced.

Also if Asli tracking services are used please negotiate a price for their services they need our support, just as much as you will need their support if you get lost in the Jungle.

If any one knows of a good Asli tracker whom lives Tanah Rata I would appreciate contact details.

Bus Coach to Tanah Rata Booking Questions

Hi, I'm planning for trip from Ipoh to Cameron in Dec and have these questions about taking coach to Tanah Rata -
1) Should I book coach now or is it safe to book 2 days before departure?

2) Are there any internet booking for Unititi and Kinta Omnibus? (I can't seem to find any) Which is the better one to take?

3) Do the buses leave on time?

4) How long is the journey by coach going by the new highway? I've read that it is 3 and half, but some says it is only one and a half by car..

Would be great if you could help! Thanks in advance!

Artsy
Singapore
18/11/2011

Dear Artsy,

Will try to answer some of your questions, though I don't know all of them

1) Holiday season is coming so might be better to book in advance to ensure available seat. Or take your chances on that day. Up to you.

2) Don't know of any internet booking for bus/coaches. Besides they are all not that IT savvy.

3) Depends on the bus company. Most are on time except one company, I think it is the Regal bus company that plies the Tapah - CH - Simpang Pulai route. This one always got bus breakdown and bus delays.

You could also try the minivan service from Kang Tours and Travel. Cost a bit more but more reliable.

4) Do note bus / coach take longer time to travel with stops and slower speed limit (though some do break the law). The maximum bus speed allowed on highway is 90kph but I have been overtaken by buses at 110kph (speed limit of highway). So if you were me, I don't feel safe taking buses. So avoid night buses, many accidents occurs at night when bus driver is sleepy and night driving is also has poorer visibility.

Time taken by car (without speeding and getting a speeding ticket)
KL to Tapah = 1.5 hours.
Tapah to Tanah Rata = 1.5 hours.
Tapah to Simpang Pulai = 20 minutes
Simpang Pulai to Tanah Rata = 1.5 hours.

So perhaps you could add another 1/2 to 1 hour to the total time for above time for buses (not each leg, just the total)

Cheers!
Jan.

No Bus Coach from KLIA to Cameron Highlands

Hi,

We really appreciate the amount of hard work you have put into a most useful site for travelers. We are making our third visit to Malaysia next year in January and will land at LCCT and overnight there. If you have the info to hand it would be much appreciated if we can bus/coach directly to Tanah Rata. John and thanks.

Dear John Betts,

Welcome to Malaysia.

For your info, there is no direct coach/bus from KLIA to Cameron Highlands.

First you have to travel to KL, go to Puduraya bus station and get a bus from there to Cameron Highlands.

Cheers!

Selamat Hari Raya and Happy Merdeka Day

Selamat Hari Raya and Happy Merdeka Day!
Somewhat late in my greetings coz been busy! Family decided to travel to Raub and visit relatives. The traffic was light as most balik kampung rush already done on Sat or Sun.
Traveling in Pahang, there is still much virgin forest and really enjoyed the scenery. Baby was excited for another excursion to take in new sights and adventure in discovery. He just recently learned how to walk unassisted, so to encourage him more, outings like this would spur him to explore more while doing more walks to strengthen his muscles.
Raub is not such a small town. The township is spread out a bit and boast several supermarkets. Our trip here visiting the relatives usually ended up with makan-makan! Nothing like a happy meal to foster better family relationship.
While travelling to Raub, I was thinking about the new route from Kuala Lipis which is near to Raub, that would take you to Cameron Highlands. Already there is narrow winding route from Raub to Fraser's Hill, so I wonder about that road leading to CH from here.
Well, won't be exploring about that route for now.
Just enjoying my stay here in an auntie's house which she also runs as a budget guesthouse for travelling salesman who need a place to bunk in for their business travel.
Nice to take break from my work and have a good bonding time with wife and baby!
So a belated Hari Raya and Happy Merdeka day!

It is really wet in Camerons

Rain, rain, rain in Cameron Highlands! Didn't quite make it back to Greenhill Apartment, so got a bit wet. Baby was alright. So now we could not load up our luggage to the MPV. Fortunately the apartment owner was kind enough to allow us to wait till the rain stop before we load up and move on back to KL/PJ.

Meamwhile we hold up in the apartment and watch some Astro.
Our next stop is to be at water crest restaurant. Will see how the weather holds out.

So wet in Cameron Highlands!

---- [22/8/2011]

The trip was particularly tiring for me and I think I caught a chill from all the rain. Now not only feeling the after effects of tiredness (with body ache and especially my neck ache from the very long drive home), but I think I caught a slight mild flu. Hope my body's antibody will fight it out and not let it slide to a full blown flu. Ah, sometimes you need a break from a holiday break as well!

Raining in Camerons

What a wet trip to Cameron Highlands. It was raining pretty frequent making the weather rather cold. I think tonight the temperature would easily hit 16 degrees Celcius.
Fortunately there were breaks in the raining pattern and we still managed to go some places like the Sg Palas Boh Tea Plantation.
Tonight we will go for dinner at Jasmine Cafe House. My wife said she ate there before. Could be, but I don't recalled with her. So this time will see after we try some of the house specialities.
Would be good to meet up with old friend and have a good time.
Meanwhile it was just plain wet here in Cameron Highlands.

Night Market still in Brinchang

Night market is still in Brinchang. Although earlier this year there was talk by the Majlis of Cameron Highlands to shift the night market to Tanah Rata, in the end I suppose the night market traders were none too pleased. Perhaps the Tanah Rata location was not good enough. It was to be behind the food court at the foot of the hill where the Majlis office building was located. It didn't look big enough from what I see. So in the end the Brinchang night market still remained. That meant on super peak period it is best to avoid the Simpang Pulai way in as you would be caught in a massive traffic jam.
Frankly speaking, even for me, a tourist, I would prefer it in Brinchang. This was where it started, so it should be maintained here. Also most people would know it here so Brinchang night market is still best as is.

BOH Tea Plantation Sg Palas

BOH Tea Plantation Sg Palas is one the more popular stop for many tourist. Although it is not one of the easier location to travel as one will have to negotiate the narrow winding road and give way when there is oncoming traffic.
Despite having been there so many times, one still never tires of the soothing greenery of the tea plantation. The renovated tea centre makes very modern compare to previous wooden tea shop structure.
It is a draw many tourist bringing along their DSLR and snapping away at the scenery and self potrait photos.
When we left at the closing time of 5pm many are still making their way to the Sg Palas Boh Tea Plantation. They should have done their research or even read the old signage, coz they are going to be dissappointed when the security guard refuse them entry and turn them back at the plantation gate.
For us, it was time to say sayonara to Boh Sg Palas Tea Plantation and head on elsewhere.

Your website is very helpful

Hi, the site you are maintaining is very helpful, I never been to Cameron Highlands although I'm born here. But I wish to go there once day. After reading through the info, it really make me wanna make my trip there immediately. :)

Greenhill Apartment relaxing here

Just checked in Greenhill Apartment today. With loads of things to transfer from the car, everbody taking a relaxing break watching Astro AXN channel. Mind you 3rd floor and half the kitchen stuff and luggage and baby stuffs then three flight of stairs...
Ye, ye, good exercise. But got more to go in Cameron Highlands.
Sky kinda cloudy and threatening rain. That kinda put a hold on some of our outdoor activities. BOH tea plantation, no rain please!
Meanwhile better get a moving from Greenhill Apartments here!

Heritage Hotel view from Greenhill Apartment

Heritage Hotel view from Greenhill Apartment

Here's a nice view of Heritage Hotel from Greenhill Apartment. Due to lack of available rooms in hotel from the Heritage Vacation Club, we had to shift to Greenhill Apartment the next day to house a large number of family members.
Actually could have avoided all this hassle but due to miscommunication from my wife and my dad and the Heritage Vacation Club, the bookings became a mess. So no choice, wasted a night's stay of the Vacation Club points plus the hassle of having to shift all the luggage from hotel to apartment.
Well you, whenever a family group travel, and now with baby, the sheer number of items to bring for a trip is quite a bundle.
Anyway, this apartment got a nice view despite having to port all the stuffs 3 floors up! Fortunately many hands make work light.
Now the sky is getting balmy and slight drizzle, so our outdoor activities to the various attractions in Cameron Highlands may be hampered somewhat. Anyway, time for lunch soon, but first feed baby and then off we go!

Waking up in Cameron Highlands

Waking up in Cameron Highlands. Temperature in the morn about 23.4 C in the hotel room according to my Casio watch.
Still felt very cold here in Heritage Hotel. Now planning for breakfast coz my dad's Heritage Vacation club don't have breakfast included. I think we will go Uncle Chow for breakfast coz my family has not tried it yet.
As for baby? Will let him sleep with uncle and auntie coz their paid room came with breakfast and they can take care sleeping baby while we quickly take our breakfast.
Good to be up in Cameron Highlands to cool off from KL heat. Kinda off peak this weekend probably due to Ramadhan fasting month.
So go for some chow chow now!

Camerons here we come!

Time to take a break and travel to Cameron Highlands once again! This time round my dad would like to finish using his Heritage Vacation Club points so my parent, Lena, her mom and her sis together with baby will be tagging along. This will be the first time for good old baby to travel to his dad favorite vacation spot in Malaysia!
Yeah! Would be very interesting trip for him and bet his head will spin left and right taking in all the highlands sights!
Heard it will be cold this time right round. The Cameron Highlands's weather is rather wet this time round and there was some landslide with some fatalities. Hopefully by the time we make our way there it will be normalize. Still the weather is rather unpredictable.
I'm making the trip during ramadhan in the hope that it will be low peak so can avoid the holiday crowd. I should think so too judging from the reduced website traffic. Less searches could well mean less tourist during this fasting month.
There is a super long holiday during Hari Raya and Merdeka day combine during the end month of August. Could be crowded then again most people would want to 'balik kampung' to be with family. Still it is hard to say whether it will be a superpeak crowd as some may still want to holiday as an alternative to returning to their hometown.
For now, I will make trip earlier to avoid such peak times. Just want to enjoy and relax with family away from the crowd!
And of course collect info to update the Cameron Highlands Destination website too.
Bon voyage!

Dear Fatima Hafid,

You can try to charter a taxi, in your case two taxis to take you directly from the mainland jeti to Cameron Highlands. If they are not willing to make the trip, you can try to book with Kang Tours and Travel minivan service:

http://www.cameron-highland-destination.com/kang-tours-and-travel.html

If they also do not stop by at the jeti, you may have to make your way to Ipoh and from there either charter taxis or book Kang's minivan service or take bus coaches to Cameron Highlands.

Some downtime expected on this website

My website will be down for short periods during the following days. My hosting at SBI is doing some major upgrade so just have to bear with for the better running of the website in future. Here's the info sent to me, you can have look see if you happen to be unable to load up on my main Cameron Highlands Destination website. Cheers!

---

Some downtime is needed for some major upgrades to our clusters, deployments of NetApp shared memory, etc.
It boils down to short periods of downtime (for your site this time, NOT for access to SBI! or the forums)...

1) Tuesday, June 21 - Starting 7:00 AM (ET), your site will be down for 10-15 minutes (best estimate), on a rotating basis (i.e., not all SBIers down at the same time). Again, Site Central and the forums should remain up. We'll be all done within an hour.

2) Tuesday, June 28 -- Less than 5 minutes of downtime per site TOTAL, with only 1-2 minutes of downtime at a time. Will require most of the day to finish all blades, etc.

Wednesday, June 29 -- If we were not able to finish everything on the 28th, work continues.

3) Tuesday, July 5 -- Less than 5 minutes of downtime, with only 1-2 minutes at a time. Will require most of the day.

---

Planning to make more posts, but kind of too many things to do. Once you have a baby everything becomes heady and the time constraints increases! Still it is a joy to play with good old baby. Future coming in bright and sunny, and of course cool too if heading to the highlands! Planning to bring baby along on one of the trips! He sure need to cool down as do I!

Enjoying myself in Awana Genting Highlands

Refreshing change instead of Cameron Highlands, made a trip to Genting Highlands instead. Hold up in Awana Genting Highlands for the night and next day Genting View Resort coz my church having a camp over there. Good to stay a day earlier and relax and enjoy a simple break.
Coz when the church camp runs is going to be a heady day of lessons and of course fun games and worship session.
I think I'm going to be late but no hurry. Let the day take care of itself. After all Jesus did say not to worry too much about tomorrow for today already have enough of its trouble. So take it as it comes.
For now I enjoy my buffet breakfast and have my cup of tea. Complete this blog and time to make a move!

2) Like your current frontpage of the apartment advertisement. (how much and the duration, I noticed that thre are some without hyperlink). Probably you may write and review of the apartment which is standardise across on your website
3) How much to create a proper website?

My blogspot is www.chgreenstay.blogspot.com
The apartment is located just next to Smoke House, facing golf course. You may get more info from my blogspot.

Looking for Guesthouse Backpacking Accommodation and Tours

Hye there

I found this website is really helpful and I appreciate all your effort in maintaining this website. I'm planning for backpacking expedition to Cameron with my girlfriend this coming end of June or early July...

Planning to take bus from KL to Tanah Rata and look for hotels there..at the same time, trying to look for any tour package available there..

Do you have any suggestion hotels or tour package for Cameron..hope to hear some great stuff from you guys.. If possible, please suggest me the affordable single room. Although I'm willing to take the double room and share the room with my gf, it's wrong to do that in Malaysia and the possibility of the government agencies to check is there.

So, hope to find some good suggestion from you.

Cheers!

27/4/2011

Dear Long,

Hotels stay will depend on your budget. If you want comfortable go for star rated like Heritage, Century Pines, Equatorial, Strawberry Park, De La Ferns, etc. If budget, there are guesthouses like Kang Travelodge, Father's Guesthouse, Cameronian Inn, Eight Mentigi and KRS/Twinpines. Do check my hotel list for short listing.

And there is no problem staying with your girlfriend in the hotel room. What you do there is private and none of the government business. Do keep it quiet though. That's where star rated hotels would be better suggestion. ;P

For tours, try Father's Guesthouse Cameron Secrets or Kang Travel and Tours. You can find their contacts on my website.

Cheers!

Since I'm a backpacker, I'm looking forward for guest house which is close to shops and bus station at the same time and I find that these 7 are suit with my budget and at the same time not too far from bus station.

Do it been a problem if I book tour and guest house separately? For example, let say I'm staying in Cameronian Inn but choose to take Kang's Place Tour Package? And yeah, my concern is still about the accommodation with the government check stuff. LOL! But yeah, should survey deeply more about this. How about dorm? Between these 7, which one is the best? If two single room seems to be too expensive, I might consider taking 1 dorm and 1 cheap double room like in 8 Mentigi and Gerard's Place.

This is my first time coming to CH. So, sorry for too many questions.

Many thanks,
Long
27/4/2011

Dear Long,

Gerard's Place? this one I haven't heard before, where is this? I would like to check this up next time I'm up there.

Guesthouse are economical but the sound do travel out so you need to keep it quiet at night to avoid disturbing the peace. Boy and girl in same room is ok otherwise all the locals will have a big problem when going for holiday (including courting couples)! Private places would be an invasion of privacy but then we don't really have privacy laws here and sometimes MPs come up with stupid suggestions and comments every once in awhile. Enough of my gripe about local laws.

Room and tours are mutually exclusive, so no problem there.

As for which guesthouse, I can't say which is better as I found them all to be rather nice though each has their own pros and cons. Book the rooms, better than dorm. More privacy, besides the difference isn't that much (c'mon, Brit Pound to Ringgit just a few Pound difference won't even make a dent in your budget! But when I went to UK for holiday, it really hurt my pocket you know!). Esp for couples. And no worries about enforcers, they don't disturb the place (never heard of any in CH anyway) as it will give tourism Malaysia a bad name.

Cheers!
Jan
28/4/2011

Dear Jan,

That's gonna be a great idea. By the way, Gerard's Place is in conjunction with Father's Place. Normally in peak time, Father's Place gonna be really full and they set up Gerard's Place as a back up., But yeah, based on tripadvisor website, the review on Gerard's Place is higher compare to Father's Place. But you shall check it. It just around 3-5 minutes walk from Father's Place.

Oh yeah, is Father's Place far from town? Cause another guest houses are close to town except Father's Place. Maybe a rough idea about its location gonna be really helpful.

Cheers!
28/4/2011

Ah, Gerard! Should have known he made place name after himself! Will have to check it up with him next time I go up there. All the guesthouses are within walking distance to Tanah Rata (except when it rains then it will feel very far! Haha!). 5-10 minutes walk is about it for any of them. Me being lazy, I drive, which takes less than a minute but takes another 3-5 minutes looking for parking! Tanah Rata is a very small town.

Cheers!

Going to Cameron Highlands

Looks like many people is planning to go Cameron Highlands in the upcoming super long weekend! With the Malaysian holidays and school breaks around the corner it is sure going to be a nice crowd up there.

My parents did a good planning and went up last weekend. Hope they had a good time.

As for me, with so many busy things to do, I doubt I will be going up to Cameron Highlands anytime soon. Missed the opportunity to tag along with the Church seniors who stayed in OMH which I think stands for Overseas Mission House. It seems it is a nice bungalow reserved only for Church workers only.

I wanted to show them around CH, but I guess and of course try out the bungalow. I guess I will just have to wait till another time, if God willing. Anyway, they had a good time at the Highlands Restaurant charcoal steamboat with that tall signature funnel. They thoroughly enjoyed it but wondered how they are going to fit in the entire cell members when they go up there again. I didn't have the restaurant number so won't be able to help them to make the booking.

Well, I didn't think of making a Malaysian food blog for my website at that time when I visited Highlands Restaurant.  Well will just have to wait another time to collect the name card and update the web page.

Church Camp @ Genting Highlands

This time round my church will be organizing a church at Genting View apartments in Genting Highlands instead of Cameron Highlands. I think it is a good thing too considering the logistic matter of ferrying the various equipment while just staying for one night only. So Genting Highlands is a good choice since it takes approximately one hour drive from KL.

But my wife wanted a longer break, and taking a Friday off was a good idea. Considered as non-peak, the rates were cheaper at Awana Genting Highlands. If we were to stay on for Sunday night the hotel rate would double!

For additional cost savings we borrowed a Genting World card and booked online and saved off about RM30. Not bad, not bad. Would be looking forward for this break. Looks like this will be a first for my baby. His first highlands trip! I'm sure he would enjoy himself too being such an inquisitive little toddler!

Enjoy yourselves this coming long holiday break!

Cheers!

Romantic Hotels Resort for Proposals, Recommendations

I was planning to stay 2 nights from 29 April 2011. In the same time I would like to proposed to my gf the next day. Any idea which hotel I can do so?

Dear Ken,

If you have the budget, go for YTL Cameron Highlands Resort, Lakehouse Resort, or Smokehouse Hotel. Other notable choice include De La Ferns.

casa dela rosa. any comment? - Ken 15/4

Oh, that one facing the golf course. Have not seen their rooms. Looks nice from the outside. Pricey too. They belong to the same owner for a chain of hotels in CH (De La Ferns, Rosa Passedena). Should be good. Let me know if the hotel was good. And of course, do tell me she said yes to your proposal!

SBI Meet Up for tea or coffee, nice!

Hi again Jan,

I just have to write again as I saw that you have made your site through SBI, amazing, that is what I am doing now! Building up a site with SBI..but not about traveling. Anyway, that is really interesting and such a coincidence. Right now I am in Sarawak for the election, I have made my living my journalism to be able to live abroad, which I am very tired of, and that is how I found solution with SBI to change my direction. I will visit Cameron Highlands in May, have a look around, and then if I like it up there I plan to return in late August/early September after spending a longer time with parents and friends as I haven't really been back in Sweden for six years. I don't know if you have time, just felt spontanously that it would be nice to just meet for a coffee or whatever. Two SBI:ers in the same spot.

Cheers
Anna Sternfeldt
Sweden
14/4/2011

Dear Anna,

Small world indeed, though hardly surprising as I have SBI friends (unfortunately due to distance, haven't got a chance to meet up with any). I don't live in Cameron Highlands though. Much like Ken Evoy's daughter who has a beautiful website about Aguilera while they live in Canada.

If ever we do meet, yes, we can have coffee perhaps Starbucks? There is one in Cameron Highlands, or go for tea or teh tarik!

For renting or long stay in a house or apartment you can try Michael Chin (+6012-506070 / +6019-5126070).

Oh, by the way, what's your website URL?

Cheers!
Jan.
15/4/2011

Dear Jan,

Thank you very much for your quick reply!! And I am very grateful for the contact details. Actually when I have looked into it a bit more I think Cameron Highlands will be a bit too chilly for me J I have become such a tropical person. But I will have a look at the surroundings as it seems to be so beautiful with the mountains. I may find an area on the way up that is comfortable, not as hot as KL but not as cold as on the top. I will also travel over to the east coast and see how it is there. Some people say it is very peaceful.

My site is not up yet, but my domain name is Best-alternative-fuel-sources. I am on my way to put info together but I have a bit of a break as I do some writing work for the moment over here. But I think it will be up in June.

We keep in touch. I will do some traveling around the peninsula in early/middle of May, otherwise I might be back in early September if I find a place where I like to settle in. We’ll see.

All the best.
Anna

Wanted to go CH but

I wanted to join my church members who were planning to head off to Cameron Highlands to scout for makan places and make arrangement for their upcoming cell meeting event. I would have liked to stay in the mission bungalow and perhaps even show them some of the interesting attractions and restaurants that i have discovered and of course fellowship with them too. But due to unforeseen circumstances, looks like I will have to give this opportunity a miss. Oh, well. Will see next time.

Affordable budget accommodation recommendations

Hello..

Terima kasih. :)

Nooratika Nuzairi (ika)

7/4/2011

Dear Nooratika,
Haven't seen the ad from Genting. Best you go during low peak season for cheaper rate. But if you really want affordable for student you should consider Cameron Highlands and stay in Guesthouse. Genting do not cater for cheap accommodation, but Cameron Highlands does.

There are 5 guesthouse you can try in Cameron Highlands:
-Kang Travelodge
-Father's Guesthouse
-Cameronian Inn
-Eight Mentigi
-Twin Pines

It is dormitory style shared room at RM15 per night per person.

need to find time to update website

Gah! Sometimes so busy no time to update website. Sometimes it is due to work, sometimes family things, and yet again sometimes just want to relax and end up procrastinating! Ah!

Sometimes when think about the things that need to update, feels overwhelming coz got so much to do!

Ever feel like this? Sure you do! Just got to do it no matter what!

Get a move on man!

When you do your research well

This Cameron Highlands website or blog is thhe best there is. It's culmination of hardwork with a lot of time and effort put to be the best website about the Malaysian highlands.
And when people regard me as a guru and seek you out for advice, you know you are very top on the list. Still there is much work to be done as my website is incomplete!
My church friends was asking about where to have good steamboat meal. From what I gather, Mayflower restaurant is best value for money. They are located in Tanah Rata somewhere opposite the abandon buildings.
If trying something unusual, like charcoal steamboat, head off to Brinchang and look out for Highlands Restaurant or COP organic steamboat.
Anyway i still got many restaurants to blog about so this is going to be a long on going process.
Cheers!

Cameron Highlands Thieves

Whoa! Received this link about a family using a child trying to shop lift this shop in Cameron Highlands. C'mon, is the economy so bad that they have to resort to this kind of criminal activity?

The shop owners were shocked. I'm shaking my head and wondering where this world is headed. Maybe they are taking their cue from the current ruling government, if you can get away with murder, then duit err... do it.

Look, shop owners are struggling to keep their business going. If you feel the price of goods is expensive it is not the shop owner's fault for charging so high. It is the way the economy works. The law of demand and supply; cause and effect. The higher price of petroleum leads to higher cost of production and transportation and raw material which in turns pushes up inflation which is the real thief of everyday person struggling to make their income stretch.

Two wrongs do not make a right. And the government is not doing anything to address the situation and people's real income has become smaller over the years. A graduate's pay 20 years ago and now is still the same or worst, smaller. So the fault lies with the government not doing enough to alleviate the people's situation.

Still that doesn't mean the lay person has to resort to curi-curi Malaysia. Hey this is cuti-cuti Malaysia not the other way round!

Taking a break at Desa Park City

My wife wanted to have a lookee see at some baby stuff at Desa Park City and later I need to get some grocery and Desa Park City got Max Value, a Jusco mini supermarket. So off we go with my mom-in-law and niece in tow. Niece is very happy to go for an outing, for a 2 year old she's been clamouring to go out just about every other day.
It was long wet ride finally arriving at Desa Park City. First thing first, a quickie coffee break, got the buy 1 free 1 using my Citibank clear credit card. I though wife want a drink too turn out she rather go shopping and I ended up with 2 large cup of coffee! Ugh, that was a little too much for me while I chilled out in Coffee Bean.
This place is nice, very upmarket and very much beyond my means to own a property here. My wife likes it very much too, but with a price tag like RM800,000 for a condo, RM2 million for a house, it is way beyond my means.
Besides, I'm planning for a property invesement where at least rental inccome must cover montly loan installament to eventually get a retirement fund going later when the loan is fully paid up. This upmartket area is not the right place for future investment. For living here that would be fine, but for investment, this would not be right.
Anyway, i'm feeling bloated and rather 'jelat' dring 2 cuppa coffee.
Sky is cloudy here. With many people having their evening stroll at the park, some with their little toy dog pets and young girls in their skinny jeans walking about. Nice place to hang out and watch the world go by. Baby likes it too. Head spinning left and right looking at sights.
Sitting here is just so comfortable. But time to get a moving!

Contacts already provided, please do your own legwork

Really how difficult it is to just pick up the telephone and dial the numbers on my Cameron Highlands website? I have already done all the tedious legwork of running around up there in Cameron Highlands sacrificing my leisure time (although I do enjoy the romp) to collect the accommodation contacts and then compiling it and posting it onto my website.

Take for instance the homestays contacts in Taman Sedia. I walked the entire neighbourhood noting down the owner's contact and telephone numbers listed in front of their houses. It took me an entire afternoon to do it. I don't have the time to knock at each homestay owner's door and then do further interviews like whether you got Astro, email account, can speak English or not, hot shower, room condition, how much to it cost to stay, got cats and pets or not, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah

Hello? I may know a lot of things about Cameron Highlands but I'm no walking encyclopaedia. Best way to find out is to pick up that telephone next to your desk or use your handy-dandy mobile phone, dial the number and find out from the horses' mouth!

Easy, yes?

Contacts for Homestay at Taman Sedia

Hi Jan

Thanks for the information on your website on Cameron Highlands.

One thing caught my attention - Homestay at Taman Sedia. You've posted a list and their telephone numbers.

Do they have a email address and can they understand english if I call or write?

What I want to know is how much will it cost to stay for 3 nights for 2 persons.

What else would be provided besides accommodation? What to expect from this kind of stay?

Thank you for your assistance.

Cheapest Day Trip from Kuala Lumpur to CH to Penang

Hello,

I am planning a day trip from Kuala Lumpur for one person. I am looking for the cheapest way to do this. Organisations tend to be expensive for single travellers and won't allow me to join someone else. Another possibility is to do a 2 day-tour and ending up in Penang.

What do you recommend? My compliments for this very informative site!

Best regards,

Casper Spiering
Netherlands
7/3/2011

Dear Casper,

Usually tour companies are still the best and cheapest than doing it on your on. There are many tour companies in KL so look around for one suitable for you. That's what I would do. I have done this method in Bangkok, Melbourne, London, and it has worked well so far.

Backpackers Day Trip Tour to Brinchang

I need your help to suggest me about how to buy day trip or tour to Brinchang. I will go to Cameron Highland in April and stay in Tanah Rata for 2 nights but it'd be great if we can set up our travel plan to fully utilize our short vacation.

Thanks in advance for your advice & thanks for useful info in your link.

There is no day trip package to Brinchang. Just use a taxi to get there.

8/3/2011

Thank you Jan.. However, we are budget backpackers so we would like to know how much we will pay for it or any public transportation provided.
Boebie
8/3/2011

Dear Brown,

It is possible to walk from Tanah Rata to Brinchang, how long it takes I have no idea as I usually drive. Driving takes about 5 minutes, so it might take about 30 minutes by walking (just a guess). Taxi cost RM25 per hour, can take up to 4 passengers (1 front, 3 rear) if you are plus size then only 2 rear or you can try to squeeze in! Or you can use the public bus but walking might get you there sooner than public bus!

Backpackers... so very likely you will be staying at Kang Travelodge, Father's Guesthouse, Cameronian Inn, Twinpines or 8 Mentigi. Check with them about tour packages with cheapest starting from RM60.

Cheers!

Thanks a heaps!
We will follow your suggestion.
Have a good day!

HSBC Smart Privileges Hotel Promotion 2011

While browsing through the HSBC Smart Privileges brochure, invariably I would peek in to the hotel promotion. Guess what? I found two hotel promotions for Cameron Highlands! The Equatorial Cameron Highlands Hotel and Hotel De La Ferns. So if any of you guys are holding a HSBC credit card, you could have a look see look see on the promotion and see if this meets your budget. These are not your budget hotel, so do expect to pay for a good stay. Having stayed in all kinds of hotel so I should know that you do pay for the extras.

HSBC Smart Privileges Hotel Promotion 2011

Hotel De La Fern HSBC Promotion
Hotel Equatorial Cameron Highlands HSBC Promotion

If this is not your budget then look through my Cameron Highlands hotel list and take a pick at any of the hotels. Yep, there is so many and you wonder which ones to choose. I may not be able to look at all of them but did managed to look see some of them. Now all I need is to find time to post my findings. Wish I got more time to do it. With work getting busy, time getting scarce and bringing up baby and family to care, this travelogue website is going to take some humongous effort to get things going!

Meanwhile you may like to study the brochure which I pick out from HSBC Smart Privilege brochure by following the links above. Or if you prefer, you can head out to HSBC website and look through their e-brochure.

Cheers!

Hotel De La Ferns Cameron Highlands HSBC Promotion 2011

While browsing further and making my blog post, I found this HSBC Promotion too in the HSBC Smart Privileges brochure. So looks like Hotel De La Ferns Cameron Highlands is jumping into the credit card promotion bandwagon too! This hotel is much pricier than the Equatorial promotion although it comes with breakfast and steamboat meal. Well this hotel is new (it's been more than a year now, still considered new I suppose) and they have been improving on their service. As the last time I checked up with them they gave me a good nice tour of the place. Just need to find the time write the blog post because I'm so busy right now I haven't found the time to do a proper update.

Hotel De La Ferns Cameron Highlands HSBC Promotion 2011
Hotel De La Ferns Cameron Highlands HSBC Promotion 2011

Hotel De La Ferns did admit their café restaurant service still need to be improved upon so let's hope this promotion which includes breakfast and steamboat dinner will live up to the improvement of F&B services.

As for the rooms, they are superb and probably charge a premium if comparing against other star rated hotels except YTL, Smokehouse and Lakehouse which are far more expensive. So you want nice and good, Hotel De La Ferns is the place. Location is great too! Just between Brinchang and Tanah Rata.

So study the HSBC Smart Privileges brochure which I extracted here and if you owned a HSBC credit card you can go for it if you feel the rates is within your budget for a Cameron Highlands vacation, right!

Equatorial Cameron Highlands HSBC Promotion 2011

I'm sure some of you guys are holding a HSBC credit card so looks like you can take up this Equatorial Cameron Highlands promotion. HSBC Smart Privileges brochure has something yummy for everybody, so while I was browsing it through I happened to bump into this hotel promotion. Such promotions are good for us right? After all it is cheaper than the usual rack rates. But of course you can still give a comparison by calling up Hotel Equatorial and ask them whether they have any other promotional rate, then compare that with the HSBC Smart Privileges promotion and see which offer is better. Shop smart mah!

Equatorial Cameron Highlands HSBC Promotion 2011<br />

I have stayed in Equatorial some years back with my wife and we certainly enjoyed our stay there saved for the rather slower maintenance / housekeeping service, in which they didn't seem to come to our room to fix up the faulty bathroom lights despite calling them so many times till finally the men came when we were about to check out. Hopefully you won't suffer any of that kind of nonsense while you stay there. This could happen in any Malaysian hotels not just here I suppose. Just a management issue. They did send an apology letter later. Hey this is a service industry and we need to compete against our neighbours like Thailand and Indonesia which I felt seem to give better hotel service when I travelled to those places. So buck up Malaysia Hotels!

Meanwhile study the promo which I extracted out from the HSBC newsletter for your perusal. Hope it meets your vacation budget!

Wedding Planners and Bridal Houses

Hi there. I loved this site and a lot of information about Cameron

Dear Anna,

Firstly, congratulations on your marriage!
As for wedding planners, I don't think there are any in CH.

4/3/2011

Note: There are no wedding planners or bridal houses in Cameron Highlands. Basically this place is too small to have such kind of services. Most likely the nearest place would be from Ipoh City. Though for wedding reception dinner or lunch, you could contact the star rated hotels like YTL Cameron Highlands Resort, Equatorial CH, Strawberry Park Resort as they have halls large enough to accommodate a large number of people. While Lakehouse and Smokehouse hotel though very cosy can accommodate smaller groups.

Cameron Highlands Apartment Selection Idea

Hi,

Me and 8 friends of mine are going to CH this coming 12 March. Now still
doing survey on accommodation. I have few options:
1. GreenHill Resort
2. Carnation Park
3. Royal Lily
4. SPM Primavilla Apartment

Which one would u suggest me the most? ps: for 9 pax

Lily
Malaysia
24/2/2011

Dear Lily,

Condition of the apartment itself will depend on the owner furnishing. If based on a general idea on information that I have learned from the people around Cameron Highlands and also staying there:

1. Greenhill resort - the one I stayed was well furnished and upkeep well. I liked this place. Can be pricey.
2. Carnation Park - heard the units are small but the surrounding is nice from what I see. A bit too far to walk to Tanah Rata though. Num Song owns many units so you can try them.
3. Royal Lily - the surrounding look ok. A little too far to walk to town. Upkeep depends on owner. Didn't receive good recommendations but there might be some good ones.
4. Prima Villa - walkable to town. SPM ones are well furnished though pricey. One reader complain about traffic noise.

Cheers!

FW: Most Strategic Apartment Location in Cameron Highlands?

Read a comment in Facebook about the most strategic Apartment location in Cameron Highlands. I'm not sure what it means by strategic. If it means close to shops and amenities, apartment located in the two main towns namely Tanah Rata and Brinchang would be most strategic. If you have a car, and want to be close by to either Tanah Rata and Brinchang, then the halfway point between the two towns such as Desa Anthurium would be most strategic.

For note, most apartments in Cameron Highlands are slight off from the town centre, so some are within walking distance, and some actually needs a lot of walking to reach the town centre and might be better off to drive down to town.

Well I hope the above explains as to the most strategic apartment location in Cameron Highlands.

Cheers!

Cosmetic changes to homepage

Decided to do a minor makeover of Cameron Highlands Destination homepage. Not much, still kept the signature earthy brown background with musky blue. I guess this is my website branding colour I suppose. Added the Facebook like panel so now visitors can 'like' and join the Facebook pages. It's been growing too! Social website to the fore! I think I still need to do some tweaking to the home page to make it more functional. But being a one man show with a day job, a baby to take care, several websites to maintain, there seemed to be insufficient time to keep constant updates and tweaking of the website. Thankfully what i have done here has been laudably good and am getting very good traffic. Kinda slow these Jan and Feb month but it is to be expected every beginning of the year when everyone is winding to high working gear. Not any different for me with so many work projects to do. With the Chinese New Year drawing to a close, it is going to be one heck of a busy year for me! Here's dreaming of taking a break to the cool Cameron Highlands! Bon voyage!

Happy Chinese New Year!

Wishing all my blog readers, facebook and twitter friends, a Happy and Properous Chinese New Year!

As the rabbit hops in to usher the New Lunar Year hops in prosperity, good health, good friends and brings the family closer together!

May God smile on you grant you wisdom, blessings and abundance overflowing!

No more Brinchang Night Market?

No more Brinchang Night Market? Well if Majlis Cameron Highlands says so everybody has to follow. Majlis plans to shift the night market to Tanah Rata. So in future it will be known as Tanah Rata Night Market and with brings along all the goodies and trash with it.

So Tanah Rata will become more lively as visitors will get to 'borong' all the veggies and stuff their mouths full of yummies.

Unfortunately, it will likely cause a massive jam in Tanah Rata instead despite that it will be held on a rather unused car park lot right under the Majlis office off from the main Jalan Besar road.

Will just have to wait and see how it goes when they do shift the Brinchang Night Market to Tanah Rata.

--- [update 20/8/2011]

Looks like the Night Market in Brinchang will remain. Nobody wanted to shift to Tanah Rata I suppose. So if on a peak holiday season, plan your travel itinerary carefully and not get stuck in traffic jam coming in via Simpang Pulai way!

SMS Greetings turns out to be MMS

Whoa! I'm not sure just what happened! Just received the Maxis bill and saw my SMS text greeting being sent out as MMS! Which means I'm now charge by MMS rate rather than the cheaper SMS rate. Could this beautiful text graphic be the cause? If so, I won't forward it anymore. I'm just going to send plain boring text instead in future.

Oh, wow! Cats and dogs again!

Oh, wow! It's raining cats and dogs here in Cameron Highlands! Spoke with a denizen here and he said it's been like this since Sep 20th 2010. Hmm, he seemed to take note of the exact date the Cameron Highlands weather has become real wet for monsoon period.

Guess it is going to be like this for a while longer more till Chinese New Year!

This morning woke up with an 20.3 degress Centigrade temperature. I was freezing a bit too when I was at Uncle Chow Kopitiam.

Then it became really hot around noon time and now it is raining cats and dogs. Will have to go back to my room to charge up my digital camera. Collected lots of info too.

Temperature is 22.2 degrees C

According to my Casio watch, the temperature now is 22.2 degrees Celcius in my room. With the monsoon rain, I'm feeling a little cold. I didn't bring my jacket and resorted to wearing 2 t-shirts to keep warm. Fortunately I just bought a pair of jeans from Queensbay Mall the other night and decided to use it without washing it first. Now I'm tired and will plonk off to sleep! Cheers!

I'm tired! Time to retire for the night

I'm dead tired and need to get some sleep! Especially since the night before and uneven sleep. Coupled with long journey, a good night's rest is a must! With the pitter-patter raindrops I should be getting some good shut eye tonight I hope!

Desa Anthurium English Home Apartment

Got a chance to view Mr Chen's English Home styled Desa Anthurium apartment. Also met up with his agent contact and had a good chat with him about the real estate situation in Cameron Highlands. I may just consider investing in a unit, but my wife has some doubt.

When it comes to real estate investment it is a major decision and commitment, but it is still much better keeping money in Fixed Deposit where the returns is paltry and cannot cope with inflation.

I was thinking to drop off my booking with USJ One Park and get the property in Cameron Highlands instead. Will have to do soon as USJ One Park is launching their showroom unit and if I like it will have to sign the S&P to seal the purchase.

Jasmine Restaurant Revisited

Ah, it is nice to meet up with old friends, Mr Foong's black pepper steak was great. It was medium done, juicy, and very popular with guests. They even have thicker version for special order case. Good beef comes from Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and Argentina. I didn't know about the latter two but they sure taste real great!

Now that they have renovated the place and open up the front, I would say that greatly improves their 'fung sui' a lot more as more walk by customers can walk in!

It's raining in Cameron Highlands

Whooee! I guess the monsoon is still affecting the weather in Malaysia, and Cameron Highlands is no different. Frequent rain and light drizzle makes for a dreary time as it really hampers your things to do in Cameron Highlands.

Trying out Eight Mentigi Guesthouse

I'm giving this Eight Mentigi Guesthouse a try. Initially I was to 'tumpang' my accommodation in Father's Guesthouse but Gerard wants to introduce his friends lodging which was started not too long ago in 2010.

A great way to boost up 8 Mentigi vacancy by having me stay the night and then later blog about it on my CHD website.

I blog more about this place later as I didn't sleep so well last night in Penang. Don't know why I'm having insomnia lately; could be due to too many things in my mind.
